Roger Federer Wins 16th Major!

World No.1 Roger Federer won his 4th Australian Open Trophy exhibiting a brilliant perfomance defeating World No.4 Andy Murray in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11) after 2 hours and 41 minutes.Federer was contesting his 22nd grandslam final & Murray his second ,the previous being at the 2008 US Open Final, which also he lost in straight sets to Federer.Federer dominated the first set closing it out in 43 min though Murray couldn't take advantage of the 3 break point opportunities in the fifth game.

In the Second set Federer came out with great serves didn't even face a single break point and finally won the set 6-4.In the third set Murray showed on his best perfomances ever, he showed great fighting spirit finally breaking Federer's serve in the fifth game to take a 4-2 lead & was serving for the set at 5-3, but it did not last long as the Swiss Master immediately broke back and levelled it 5-5.

A thrilling tie break in third set was a pure test of nerve for both players, Murray started great with 2-0 lead but Federer immediately levelled it.Many thought the match will be pushed to four sets but it didn't happen as Murray couldn't capitalize on his 5 set point opportunites, as Federer said after winning the match "I think it would have been very interesting obviously to see how he would have handled it (a fourth set) coming off such a high of winning the third set,", reflecting on Murray's chances to win the fourth set. "Then still I think it was very physical, so it would have been very taxing on his body and my body just to see how we would have both sort of pulled up after that third set. Unfortunately, it didn't happen for him. But it was played at a very high intensity, I think, from start to finish.".

The Scot then saved two Championship Points under pressure but Federer continued to show his brilliance with strong first serves and finally came out as the winner.A very dejected Andy Murray said after the match" I can cry like Roger but it's a shame I can't play like him."

Australian Open Final Federer vs Murray Live

Australian Open Final Federer vs Murray Live:

The long awaited showdown is finally on-The 2010 Australian Open Final, Melbourne! 15 time grandslam champion Roger Federer clashes with his young rival Andy Murray of Britain. This will be their second meeting in a grandslam final.Federer advanced to his 22nd grandslam final easily dismissing Frenchman Tsonga in straight sets. When asked, "What does he think about the final against Murray?" he said "Now that he didn't win the first one, I think it doesn't help for the second one around," he said. "Plus he's playing, you know, me. I don't feel the pressure's really on me having to do it again, because I did it before. I think he really needs it more than I do".

Though Federer & Murray respect each other,Murray has been getting irritated by such remarks as he points out that though he has a positive record against Federer, he is of that opinion "I just need to figure this kid out !?" as he doesn't consider him as his rival around to beat him at the grandslams. But I strongly feel , though Federer isn't that dominate as how he was 5 or 6 years ago esp. in three set matches, he hasn't been on a 30 or 40 match streak wins as he used to before, certainly there has been a gradual decline but he has been incredibly consistent at the grandslams or at the five set matches. He has made his 23rd consecutive grandslam semifinal, he is in his 22nd grandslam final chasing for his 4th Australian Open Trophy, So despite Murray's 6-4 record against Federer & his confidence boost, I would go with Federer as my choice in the final.

Federer and Murray have played 2 finals, with Federer winning both the times, one at the 2008 US Open Final where he thrashed Murray in straight sets & at the 2005 ATP Bangkok Final. But Murray claims that he is more prepared, mentally more tough & mature than ever before, the Britain No.1 has dropped only 1 set enroute to final whereas the Russians Davydenko & Andreev had been able to push Federer to four sets in the previous rounds. But The Big Question is Will the World No.4 Andy Murray will be able to end the 74 year old title drought as the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a grandslam?
