3 time Australian Open Roger Federer & 2005 Australian Open Champion Marat Safin clash in third round of Australian Open 2009.Federer who is chasing for his 14th grandslam title and equal Pete Sampras's all time record beat Korolev of Russia 6-2,6-3,6-1 in the second round to set up a clash with the Former World No.1 Safin.
Safin's last win against Federer was in the 2005 Australian Open semifinal in a thrilling five setter 5-7 6-4 5-7 7-6(6) 9-7, he eventually went on to win the championship beating Hewitt in 4 sets in the final.But since that victory at the Rod Laver Arena, Safin has never won a single title.However he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon 2008 thereby losing to Federer in tight 3 sets.This was their last meeting.Safin was out for most of the season(i.e after Wimbledon 2008) due to injuries & is not in real form coming into AO 2009.
Federer has beat Safin in 2004 AO final in 3 sets & also holds a 9-2 winning record against him.
